At anto, we believe the best ideas grow through collaboration.


That is why collaboration with research institutions and educational programmes has always been an important part of our journey. Through Humboldt Innovation, which connects research with industry and society, we were introduced to the Humboldt Internship Program (HIP), a programme designed to connect international students with startups and research organisations in Berlin. 

For anto, this partnership has already become a meaningful exchange of ideas. Five international students have joined our team through HIP, bringing fresh perspectives while gaining experience in a growing startup. 


Behind every successful collaboration are people who dedicate themselves to creating such opportunities. Amrei Vogel, Manager of the Humboldt Internship Program (HIP), has played a key role in bringing the program to life. During her recent visit to our office, we spoke with Amrei about the story behind HIP and what makes the program so special. 





Amrei, tell us a bit about your background.


I grew up in a village in Bavaria, surrounded by nature and different cultures through my family’s guesthouse. I first visited Berlin in 2006 and immediately fell in love with the city. Later, I moved here for my master’s degree in Central Asian Studies, focusing on Tibetan and Himalayan cultures. I am now pursuing a PhD while managing the Humboldt Internship Program.


How did you get involved with HIP?


In 2019, I was asked to temporarily replace the founding manager of HIP during her maternity leave. At that time, the program existed mostly on paper, but together with an incredible team, we built it from the ground up. Every year, we continue improving the programe and expanding the support we provide to students. 


For readers who are not yet familiar with HIP: What is the program about?


HIP is a three-month research and internship stay at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin for international Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD students.


The program offers them the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a real work environment while also gaining international experience.

What distinguishes HIP from other internship program?


HIP is built around freedom and exchange. It is not only focused on academic research, but it also creates connections between HU, research institutions, startups and Berlin itself.


Research and start-ups are not so common for internships, but these fields offer great opportunities to learn because they are very much based on collaboration and exchange. Startups in particular offer students a valuable experience.


They often provide a broader range of responsibilities, closer collaboration with founders, and insight into entrepreneurship that students may not encounter in more traditional academic environments.

What inspired the structure of the program?


Many decisions are based on my own experiences as a student and doctoral candidate. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate new systems, administrative processes, and professional environments without guidance.


That is why we want to ensure that students feel well supported throughout the entire program and have as enriching an experience as possible.

What makes a strong application to HIP?


The most convincing applications show real motivation. We are looking for students who are interested in a specific project and can explain why it aligns with their interests and goals – and not just because they want to come to Berlin, even though that is of course, a wonderful bonus.


We also value independence and curiosity. An international internship means dealing with visas, documents, apartment searches, and many new processes. No one has to have all the answers from day one – what matters is the willingness to find solutions, ask questions, and take responsibility.

What challenges do international students most often face?


For many, the apartment search in Berlin is the biggest challenge. Others need some time to adjust to a new city, a different culture, and the distance from their familiar environment.

The transition from university to professional life is often a change as well. Instead of exams or papers, teamwork, regular communication, and responsibility for real projects suddenly take center stage. While this can feel unfamiliar at first, most students quickly gain confidence and find the experience rewarding.


You have worked with many organizations as part of HIP. What stood out to you about anto?


I found anto refreshing because it is not only focused on technology, but also sustainability. 

What impressed me most was that interns are treated as true members of the team. They are encouraged to participate, share ideas, and contribute, not simply observe from the sidelines.

What advice would you give to future applicants?


Most importantly, be intentional.

Take your time to get to know the internship and the project thoroughly before you apply. Choose a project that truly interests you – after all, you will be investing three months of your time, energy, and creativity there.

Also, be proactive. Ask questions, communicate openly with your supervisors, and don't hesitate to bring in your own ideas. The HIP thrives on mutual exchange: Students learn from the organizations – and at the same time bring new perspectives that create real added value.
